A major internet disruption hit some of the world’s biggest websites after Amazon Web Services, or AWS, suffered a widespread outage. The cloud computing giant confirmed the issue on Monday, saying it was experiencing significant error rates in its DynamoDB database system across the US-EAST-1 region, one of its busiest hubs. The outage triggered connectivity problems for a wide range of platforms, from gaming and financial services to social media and e-commerce. Among the affected sites were Perplexity AI, Robinhood, Signal, and Coinbase, which all reported disruptions linked to AWS. Perplexity’s CEO, Aravind Srinivas, said in a post on X that the company was down due to the Amazon issue and was “working on resolving it.” Downdetector, a platform that tracks internet outages, showed hundreds of reports of users unable to access services including Zoom, Roblox, Fortnite, Duolingo, Canva, and even Wordle. Amazon’s own platforms, including Prime Video, Alexa, and its main shopping website, also experienced issues, while Reuters reported that Lyft’s app went down for thousands of users in the US. Some banks in the UK were also affected, with customers reporting trouble accessing online accounts. AWS said it had “identified a potential root cause” and was working on multiple solutions to restore full service. As one of the world’s largest cloud service providers, Amazon’s servers host critical infrastructure for countless companies.
